The fact that books are still banned in schools actually blows my mind. I recently befriended a guy who is a 7th & 8th grade English teacher in Omaha, Nebraska. When I asked about the challenges of teaching in such a conservative community (which is how he described the place, not an arbitrary conclusion I had jumped to), I learned that several books, including The Giver, are banned from their schools. I HATE The Giver and, for some reason, I feel extra-outraged that other people are being denied the right to (intelligently) hate The Giver, too.
